On Sobriety and Consent

Plenty of things can cause a change in mental state, and not all of them are drugs. Anger, grief, mania, depression, sleep issues, stress, and many other things all affect our mental states, and we learn from a young age to function this way.

I don’t believe in a hard “sobriety” line. To say only sober people can consent is a cop-out. Even assuming a very narrow definition of sobriety, you exclude people on mood stabilizing medications, long term painkillers, and other necessary pharmaceuticals.

Black and white rules are no substitute for good sense. If you suspect someone is incapable of informed consent, especially if you don’t know them well, by all means err on the side of caution. But don’t overdo it – if you only have sex with people whose mental states are entirely stable, you’ll never get laid.
